Very thought-provoking and well-written. If you'll permit me a very crude bifurcation of the topic, I'm curious about the balance in participation between clubs based on interests vs identity--if you know. It seems to me the healthiest campus cultures would have more participation in the former. That might be a sign that increasing numbers of students don't see their ethnic/religious/gender identity as their most defining feature.

Thanks for your kind comment! From my perspective, student participation remains largely concentrated in interest-based clubs rather than identity-based clubs. Even within the identity-based clubs I described in my article, most, if not all, members are part of several other academic, pre-professional, or interest-based clubs—definitely a good sign of a healthy campus culture.
