Why not just replace the Global Core requirement so that rather than requiring - 2? - semesters of non-Western study, there's a fixed, full blown yearlong course on literature and philosophy that explicitly aren't part of the traditional Western canon, basically a parallel of Lit Hum?

I think the appeal of the Global Core is that you get a choice whereas most of the rest of the core is set courses. Additionally, Contemporary Civilizations taken in sophomore year does focus on some of the themes you mentioned. I personally think dividing the existing LitHum makes more sense (and is easier to do) instead of adding a more rigid course structure
